HUD Budget Cuts Put Over 3700 NJ Jobs at Risk
National association issues analysis of Trump budget economic impact

3/17/2017

Following the official release of President Trump’s proposed Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 budget for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the National Low Income Housing Coalition issued an analysis of the economic impact on each state. What they found was that the proposed budget cuts would lead to 123,786 fewer jobs supported through HUD investments, 3,768 of which would be lost in New Jersey. On the economic impact, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey Staci Berger issued the following statement:

"We live in one of the wealthiest countries in the world but still millions of Americans struggle to make ends meet. The president’s budget is dangerous and out of touch with reality. Congress must reject the HUD cuts or risk an economic meltdown.

“As the rest of the nation has bounced back from the Great Recession of 2008, New Jersey’s economy has failed to keep pace. We remain number one in foreclosures, number one in millennials still living with parents, and fifth most expensive place to rent. We need an economic boost. Loss of jobs and services are recipes for disaster.

“New Jersey’s Congressional delegation should help us build a thriving NJ by protecting investments that allow our residents to be able to call NJ home. The Trump budget threatens to drag us back to the days of breadlines and Hoovervilles. Congress cannot to be complicit in this disaster. We need to move our country forward and build a thriving NJ.”

Housing advocates from New Jersey will be in Washington, DC on April 4 as part of the National Low Income Housing Coalition’s Annual Lobby Day. The Network and its members and partners are scheduled to meet with New Jersey’s Congressional delegation to discuss the economic impact of the Trump budget cuts.
