White House Homelessness Prevention Strategy Commended
NJ housing advocates encourage investments to ‘HouseNJ’

12/21/2022

A strategy by the Biden administration to reduce homelessness by 25 percent in two years was applauded by New Jersey housing advocates this week. On Monday’s White House announcement, Housing and Community Development Network of NJ (the Network) President and Chief Executive Officer Staci Berger issued the following statement:

“Housing is health, it is a basic human right. We commend the Biden administration for committing to a goal that would offer families safety and housing stability. Housing is a top concern for millions of Americans. Inflation and the pandemic was a one-two punch on household budgets; the fear of losing your home is becoming a reality for far too many people.

“To address housing affordability in NJ, we’re urging state and federal leaders to support meaningful investments outlined in our HouseNJ campaign. The 2023 state budget included several historic housing investments, this cannot be a one and done event. We need to keep the momentum going if we’re to make a dent in the shortage of affordable homes.”

Highlights of the Network’s HouseNJ campaign include:

  • Expanding rental assistance
  • Increasing the National Housing Trust Fund
  • Repairing and preserving public housing
