Housing and Civil Rights Advocates Urge NJ Assembly to Oppose Efforts to Block Affordable Homes

7/28/2017

Leaders representing housing, community development and civil rights groups have submitted a letter to members of the New Jersey Assembly opposing legislation that would halt fair housing settlements currently underway in the state. Assembly minority leadership is seeking to overturn the rules in the Legislature to cast an emergency vote as early as next week, on a bill which imposes a moratorium on fair housing litigation through the end of the year.

A letter signed by the Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey, Fair Share Housing Center, the Latino Action Network, the New Jersey NAACP, Solutions to End Poverty Soon, and the Supportive Housing Association of New Jersey requests the Assembly to reject the proposal. Citing a previous proposal passed by the Legislature addressing the regulatory process but vetoed by Governor Christie, advocates say the latest proposal is simply a hindrance on progress. Over 120 municipalities across the state have already worked with civil rights leaders and local non-profit developers to reach settlement agreements that will create tens of thousands of homes.
