NJ to receive $700K in federal grants

7/6/2017

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced today that it has awarded the Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey (the Network) $300,106, the largest in the state, to support the housing counseling services of nine nonprofit subgrantee organizations. The funds will help these organizations provide critically needed counseling to families and individuals, to meet their housing needs and to prevent future foreclosures. On the award, Network President and Chief Executive Officer Staci Berger issued the following statement:

“We thank the Department for making housing counseling a priority and for increasing the resources available through our intermediary network. This award recognizes the high-quality work done by our intermediary sub-grantees, who have dedicated and highly trained counselors working tirelessly to help people achieve their dreams. This funding will allow them to reach more residents and provide them with critically needed services.

“Our economy is still trying to get back on track, housing counselors are empowering homeowners and renters with the tools they need to achieve financial stability. Foreclosures continue to be a major problem in our state and many homeowners are struggling to stay in their homes. All of the research done in recent years, shows that investing in high-quality housing counseling helps families avoid foreclosures and helps communities thrive.”

As a funded, certified housing counseling intermediary, the Network provides pass-through housing counseling program funding to its network of qualified sub-grantee affiliate organizations which deliver housing counseling services throughout New Jersey. In this capacity, the Network provides administrative oversight around providing excellence of services, technical assistance, compliance, reporting, and training. In addition to the sub-grantees supported through the intermediary, the Network partners with more than 35 community based non-profit organizations that offer housing counseling services in their communities. Funding for the Network’s housing counseling efforts have more than doubled since its first award in 2014.
