Network Lauds Christie Childhood Lead Prevention Announcement 5/2/2016 At a State House press conference today, Governor Chris Christie announced that he will order the New Jersey Department of Health to align regulations regarding blood lead levels in children with the standards recommended by the Centers for Disease Control as well as make improvements to lead testing in schools. On the governor’s announcement, Network President and Chief Executive Officer Staci Berger issued the following statement: “We applaud the governor’s decision to take on childhood lead prevention by supporting legislation that requires the Department of Health to use the Centers for Disease Control recommended standard of five micrograms per deciliter to identify children with blood lead levels. The #LeadFreeKidsNJ effort undertaken by the Network and our partners expressed just how devastating the effects of lead on young children are, especially those being tested below the State’s standard of ten micrograms. This change will now allow more children to be identified and provide parents to the opportunity to protect their children. “Lead in our homes and schools is a public health crisis that requires government intervention. We’re pleased to see steps taken to keep our children safe and we look forward to continuing this critical work.” About the Housing and Community Development Network of NJ For more information: Nina Arce |
