NJ Legislature Sends Lead Prevention Funding Bill to Governor
Housing advocates applaud passage of bill

Both the New Jersey Senate and Assembly today voted in favor of a bill that would provide $10 million in funding for state programs that protect children from lead hazards in the home. The bill now awaits Governor Christie’s signature. On the bill, Network President and Chief Executive Officer Staci Berger issued the following statement:

“We applaud the Legislature for once again sending Governor Christie this crucial piece of legislation. In the time since the governor pocket vetoed the last attempt to fund lead prevention, we’ve learned of children in Newark and Camden being exposed to toxic lead. Thousands of other children are being exposed to lead poisoning in their homes right this minute. The Governor can and must take action to protect NJ’s children. We cannot wait for the budget process to play out until June, while kids are being poisoned today.

“Over 100 organizations across the state have asked Governor Christie to act. Even one child dealing with the devastating effects of lead poisoning is one too many, especially when the resources exist to solve this problem. Children’s health and safety is a priority for New Jersey residents, it should be an urgent priority for our governor as well.”
